European Union Center’s Call for Grant Applications
Thanks to the European Union Center’s Department of Education Title VI Grant and the European Union Center of Excellence Grant from the European Commission, the EUC is pleased to offer the following funding opportunities to the greater University of Illinois (UI) community and beyond. Included in this announcement you will find calls for UI faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students, as well as opportunities for non-UI scholars of the EU and K-12 educators and students. UI Faculty Grants
Faculty Research/Course Development Grant
The EUC is offering up to four faculty research grants for the 2012-2013 academic year. These four awards will be given to a balance of interested faculty in natural sciences, engineering, social science, and humanities fields. The grants will be offered on a competitive basis in the amount of up to $4,000. Funds MUST be used by August 15th, 2013. Applications that feature research projects combining course development and proposals for EU-related courses will be given preference in award selection.

Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC) Grant
The EUC is offering two grants of $1,500* to support the development and teaching of one-credit hour courses that accompany a regular UI course and are taught in an EU language other than English. Applicants should propose FLAC sections to accompany Spring or Summer 2012 2013 courses. Both faculty and graduate students may apply. Funds may be used to cover an hourly TA or faculty summer salary.

Faculty Conference Travel Grant
The EUC is offering grants to support faculty presenting papers on EU-related topics at
both domestic and international conferences. Domestic awards are for a maximum of
$500, and international awards are for a maximum of $1,000.*

UI Graduate Student Grants
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
EUC-offered FLAS graduate student fellowships may be used to study European languages and take area studies courses. Fellows may receive a tuition and fee waiver from the University, plus $15,000 paid monthly during the academic year. Eligibility for tuition waiver varies by home department and school. Summer FLAS fellowships carry a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees of $5,000 to study a language.

Deadline: Graduate students must submit their applications to their home departments. Deadline varies by department, during January and February each year. FLAS applications must be submitted to EUC by YOUR home department. Competition currently closed. Graduate Student Research Travel Grant
The EUC is offering three grants of 1,000 €* each to support graduate student research focused
on EU topics. Applicants from all schools are welcome to apply.

UI Undergraduate Student Grants
Travel Grants to Participate in the University of North Carolina Brussels Summer Program
The EUC will be offering three travel grants to students participating in the University of North Carolina's EUCE Brussels Study Tour of EU Institutions. These EUC undergraduate travel grants provide funds to cover travel costs and accommodations associated with participating in the University of North Carolina’s Brussels EU summer program. Undergraduate students in all disciplines and departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are eligible.

Undergraduate Research Fellow Grants
The EUC is offering three Undergraduate Research Fellow Grants in the amount of 200 €.* These funds can be used to support the creation and presentation of research posters on EU-related topics, as well as to support travel to present these posters at a conference. Applicants from all schools and majors are eligible.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Undergraduate Fellowships
EUC-offered FLAS undergraduate fellowships support students studying European languages
at the intermediate level or higher and to complete area studies coursework. Undergraduate
fellows receive $10,000 towards the cost of tuition and fees, plus a $5,000 stipend during the academic year.
Summer FLAS
fellowships carry a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees of $5,000 to study a language.

Travel Grants to Participate in the University of Washington Brussels Summer Program
The EUC will be offering one 1,000 €* travel grant to a participant in the University of
Washington summer study abroad program in Brussels. This grant will alleviate some of the
international airfare costs to fly to Brussels during Summer 2012 to complete two courses on the

Note: Interested students must concurrently apply for the program through the UI Study Abroad Office (deadline: Feb. 15, 2013) and directly through the University of Washington (deadline: March 1, 2013). Receipt of the EU Center travel grant is dependent on the applicant's acceptance to the University of Washington program. *We expect to award one grant at 1,000 €, but may modify the number and amount of the award if the applications so warrant.

Non-UI Scholars of the EU
EUCE Scholars in Residence
The EUC has funds to host emerging and leading scholars of the EU, broadly defined. Scholars
should hold faculty positions or have recently earned their PhD. Both US-based and
European-based scholars may apply. The Scholars in Residence program offers up to 2,500 € per semester to
support visits of at least one week at the University of Illinois, covering such expenses as travel,
housing, and subsistence, plus an honorarium.
Full semester or two semester residencies are also possible.

K-12 Educators and Students
2012 High School Essay Contest
The EUC is holding its ninth annual High School Essay Contest. This year’s theme is “Competition & Cooperation.”
First place winner will receive a $200 cash prize, and the student’s teacher** will win a place on a 4-day study tour to Europe in Summer 2013 organized by the UNC-Chapel Hill on behalf of the Network of European Union Centers of Excellence***.
Second place winner will a $100 cash prize
Third place winner will win a $50 cash prize
Student finalists and teachers will be recognized at the EUC’s annual EU-Day in early March 2013, which includes a luncheon with ambassadors and consular officials from European Union Member States.
** Teachers who have participated in previous Study Tours to Europe organized by the University of Illinois European Union Center are welcome and encouraged to participate in the essay contest but are not eligible to join the Study Tour to Europe in Summer 2013.
*** The 2013 summer study tour to Europe is funded by the European Commission's European Union Center of Excellence grant.

Eligibility: The contest is open to high school students in the state of Illinois. No more than three essay nominations per teacher.
