European Union Center’s Call for Grant Applications

Thanks to the European Union Center’s Department of Education Title VI Grant and the European Union Center of Excellence Grant from the European Union, the EUC is pleased to offer the following funding opportunities to the greater University of Illinois (UI) community and beyond. Included in this announcement you will find calls for UI faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students, as well as opportunities for non-UI scholars of the EU and K-12 educators and students. UI Faculty Grants

European Union Center (EUC) issues campuswide call for proposals (.docx)
The EUC at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UI) seeks proposals from UI faculty, as well as from Illinois and Midwest regional faculty at universities and four-year and two-year colleges, related to EU and European studies for research, teaching, public engagement, and economic development activities. The Center is issuing this request in anticipation of forthcoming broader institutional calls for proposals from the US Department of Education Title VI and European Union Centers of Excellence (EUCE) programs. Pending target award amounts and grant period cycles to be specified by the external sponsors, we anticipate submitting a four-year Title VI National Resource Center grant proposal of approximately $150,000 - $275,000 per year, and a three-year EUCE proposal of approximately €100,000 per year.

Faculty Research/Course Development Grant

The EUC offered three grants at €1,000* to faculty conducting research and developing courses on EU-related topics. Applicants from natural sciences/engineering, social sciences, and humanities fields were encouraged to apply. Grants that incorporate a proposed course or curriculum development plan are encouraged.

Faculty Conference Travel Grant

The EUC offered grants to support faculty presenting papers on EU-related topics at both domestic and international conferences. Domestic awards (two awards) were for a maximum of $500, and the international award (one award) was for a maximum of $1,000.*

Applicants were encouraged to submit a post about their summer abroad for publication on our Across the Pond blog and were in the running to win our "Dispatches from Europe" Blog Contest! Winners received monetary prizes. Blog submissions were to be emailed to eucenter@illinois.edu.

The winning photos will be displayed at the EUC's annual European Union Day, on the EUC website and on EUC social media outlets. Winners will also be invited to European Union Day events including the keynote address and the following reception and luncheon. UI Graduate Student Grants

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

EUC-offered FLAS graduate student fellowships may be used to study European languages and take area studies courses. Graduate students may receive full tuition and fee waiver and a stipend of $15,000 payable over the academic year. Eligibility for tuition waiver varies by home department and school. Summer FLAS fellowships carry a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees of $5,000 to study a language. Deadline: Applications should be submitted to EUC by students' departments by February 7th, 2014. Check with your own department for the departmental deadline. Graduate Student Research Travel Grant

The EUC offered three grants of 1,000 €* each to support graduate student research focused on EU topics. Applicants from all schools are welcome to apply.

UI Undergraduate Student Grants

Undergraduate Research Fellow Grants

The EUC is offering three Undergraduate Research Fellow Grants in the amount of 200 €.* These funds can be used to support the creation and presentation of research posters on EU-related topics, as well as to support travel to present these posters at a conference. Applicants from all disciplines are eligible.

Undergraduate Travel Grant for UW Summer Program in Brussels

The University of Illinois European Union Center was pleased to offer one undergraduate travel grant to a student participating in the University of Washington's EU Studies Summer Program in Brussels, July 7-August 8, 2014. The grant was offered on a competitive basis in the amount of up to 1,000€*

This grant was made possible by the EUC's European Union Center of Excellence Grant from the European Commission. This EUC undergraduate travel grant provided funds to help cover travel costs associated with participating in the University of Washington Brussels EU summer program.

Students in all disciplines and departments at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign with junior or senior standing and a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better, were eligible.

Interested students needed to apply for the program through the UI Study Abroad office (deadline: Jan. 30, 2014). A selection of applicants were then be notified, by early February, that they are being nominated by the EU Center and UI Study Abroad office for final admittance consideration to the program coordinator at the University of Washington. Additional details were be included in the notification regarding requirements for the UW application.

Recipients are expected to present about their experience through one or more written or multimedia entries for the EUC blog, and upon their return, to participate in outreach events hosted by the Study Abroad Office.

*Receipt of the EU Center travel grant is dependent on the applicant's acceptance to the University of Washington program. We expect to award one grant at 1,000€, but may modify the number and amount of the award if the number of admitted applications so warrants.

Undergraduate Travel Grants to Participate in the University of North Carolina Brussels Summer Program

The EUC will be offering three travel grants to students participating in the University of North Carolina's EUCE Brussels Study Tour of EU Institutions. These EUC undergraduate travel grants provide funds to cover travel costs and accomodations associated with participating in the University of North Carolina's Brussels EU summer program. Undergraduate students in all disciplines and departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are eligible. Program dates: June 15-20, 2014. More information about the program itinerary will be available later in Spring 2014.

EUCE Scholars in Residence

The European Union Center has funds to host emerging and leading scholars of the European Union, broadly defined. Scholars should hold faculty positions or have recently earned their PhD. Both US-based and European-based scholars may apply. The Scholars in Residence program offers up to 2,500€ per semester to support visits of at least one month at the University of Illinois, covering such expenses as travel, housing, and subsistence, plus an honorarium.

K-12 Educators and Students

2013 High School Essay Contest

The EUC is holding its tenth annual High School Essay Contest. This year's theme is "Circles of Citizenship: European Union, U.S., and Global." All participants (teachers and students) who invest serious effort in research and writing will receive a certificate of participation. First place winner will receive a $200 cash prize, and the student's teacher will win a place on a study tour to Europe in Summer 2014 organized by the UNC-Chapel Hill on behalf of the Network of European Union Centers of Excellence. Second place winner will receive a $100 cash prize. Third place winner will receive a $50 cash prize.

Eligibility: The contest is open to high school students in the state of Illinois. Teachers who have participated in previous Study Tours to Europe organized by the University of Illinois European Union Center are welcome and encouraged to participate in the essay contest but are not eligible to join the Study Tour to Europe in Summer 2014. Euro Challenge

Euro Challenge is an exciting educational opportunity for high school students (grades 9 & 10) to learn about the European Union (EU) – the largest trading partner of the US – and its single currency, the euro. The program offers students of global studies, economics, world history/geography or European studies a unique experience that moves them out of the classroom into the real world. Join Euro Challenge competition and get a chance to win cash prizes and travel to NYC! Transatlantic Educators Dialogue (TED)

The Transatlantic Educators Dialogue (TED) provides an opportunity for educators in the United States and the European Union to come together online for share exploration and examination of a variety of educational topics as they relate to issues of identity and difference, with a particular emphasis on representations of "the other" in the classroom. This experience of educational diplomacy and exploration from multiple perspectives will enable educators to overcome cultural misunderstandings and misconceptions.

Upon successful completion of TED, all participants will receive a Certification of Completion from the European Union Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. For US participants, CPDUs/CEUs (for 30 contact hours) and University of Illinois graduate credits are available. Participants will meet on-line once a week for 90 minutes: Sundays (February-May) 12:00-1:30PM (US Central Time Zone), 5:00-6:30PM (Greenwich Mean Time).
